About Brahm Sarup Singh son of Late Shri Harnam Singh, the famous vichitra veena player was born in Amritsar (Punjab) His father Shri Harnam Singh was disciple of Ustad Abdul Aziz Khan of patiala, the famous vichitra veena player.
Description Brahm Sarup Singh was an exponent of Vichitra Veena an ancient instrument. He started vocal music training from his father then to sitar and further to Vichitra Veena. His father Harnam Singh was also a Vichitra Veena player and disciple of Ustad Abdul Aziz Khan of Patiala. Brahm Sarup Singh was versatile musician. His musical expertise was not restricted to vichitra veena. He was also a good vocalist and played several other musical instruments such as Sitar, Guitar and Tabla etc. He has participated in several music conferences in the North and his Vichitra Veena recital has been broadcasting from All India Radio, Jalandhar since 1958. He is highly qualified in the field of music. He did Sangeet Bhaskar (M. Mus.) in sitar Sangeet Praveen (M. Mus) in vichitra veena Sangeet Visharad (B. Mus) in vocal classical Sangeet Prabhakar (B. Mus) in vichitra veena. He joined Pracheen Kala Kendra Chandigarh as a Head of the Department of instrumental music in the year 1970. Then he joined All India Radio (AIR) New Delhi in the year 1984 and his Vichitra Veena Recital Broadcasting from All India Radio New Delhi. He participated in several National Programmes and Music Conferences organized by AIR and Doordarshan.He has been active part in All India Bhaskar Rao Music conference organized by Pracheen Kala Kendra Chandigarh and 8th Pandit Vishnu Digamber Jayanti Music conference organized by Sangeet Kala Kendra, Agra. He was honoured with “Abhinandan Patra” by Navrang Kala Sangam, Patiala. A deep understanding of the raga and depth presentation by weaving of various intricate musical pattern and their rhythmic synchronisation was his speciality. Keeping the traditional innovations in the Vichitra Veena, he gave new dimensions to this otherwise technically limited instrument. His favourite ragas are Bairagi, Jogia, Patdeep, Lalit, Todi, Bageshwari, Bihag, Chandercouns, Malcouns, Thumri Mishra Pilu and Bhairvi etc. “Gayaki Ang” is the main feature of his playing vichitra veena recital.
