Art Nouveau’s Majolica Tiles & Pattern Floor Tiles were used in the latter half of the Victorian era in thousands of suburban houses across the British Isles, with designs predominately based on floral motifs. Later, when tiles grew in popularity among the Chinese communities in South East Asia, auspicious Chinese elements were introduced into the motifs. These included the fish, crane, bat, lion, peacock and qilin. Fruit motifs such as the peach, grape, pomegranate and pineapple were widely used in Shop houses and Peranakan Home, in the areas of Katong, Joo Chiat Road, Ann Siang Hill, Blair Road, Emerald Hill, Killiney Road and others. Today they are commonly known as “Peranakan Tiles & Pattern Floor Tiles ”.
The Heritage Peranakan Wall Tiles are more then 100 years old and these rare tiles were painstaking salvaged from old Singapore shop-houses that were torn down in the late 70s & 80s. The techniques and raw materials used to produce the tiles are no longer available, so they have become collector’s items, prized for their exquisite designs, high quality glaze and durability.
