About Thabina Nature Reserve in the Wolkberg Mountains near Tzaneen
Description Nestled in the mountains between Lekgalameetse and Wolkberg Nature Reserves, this 1510 ha reserve is located about 40km from Tzaneen and there is a 4x4 track giving access to the heart of the Reserve, the Thabina Dam where the Thabina Eco Lodge is situated.
The eight bedded lodge consists of 4 thatched and canvas Chalets with en-suite ablution facilities, a fully equipped kitchen and a spacious lounge/dining area, close to the edge of the dam with beautiful views. Six camp sites, with limited ablution facilities (for males and females separately with one shower, toilet and basin each), where you can pitch your own tents, are available adjacent to the lodge.
Several clear cool streams tumble from the misty peaks of the Wolkberg Mountains and find their way through pristine grasslands and indigenous forests into the Thabina Dam.
The Wolkberg Wilderness Area is the largest wilderness area open to the general public in South Africa and there are many opportunities to fish (or angle, whatever you wish) hike, climb the hills, canoe on the dam or mountain-bike through the neighbouring countryside. Guides from the nearby community are available to guide visitors to the various places of interest. This is recommended as one may easily get lost in the mountains or indigenous forest.
The tranquillity of the Thabina Nature Reserve is a rare gift in today’s busy and crowded world, and a few days of complete peace will do wonders for tired bodies, minds and souls. There is no electricity (NO TV OR HAIRDRIERS ETC) and limited cell phone reception is available. Heaven on earth!
The lodge is completely self-catering though bedding, cooking equipment, crockery and cutlery are all provided. If required, a local female is available to assist with washing dishes and cleaning rooms at daily rate.
Paraffin for the lamps and gas for the geysers, stove, fridge and freezer are supplied. A petrol generator is used for filling the water tank and is also operational only to supply electricity to a pressure pump when all the showers are used.
Please bring your own Firelighters, wood/charcoal, dishwashing liquid, toiletries, toilet paper and spare torch batteries (for the geysers) food and drinks.
The nearest shopping centre at Maake, where there are several chain stores including a Shoprite, pharmacy, liquor store etc., is 15 km away but it takes a 30 minute drive to get there. So be prepared and bring everything you might need.
Thabina is accessible by 4x4 vehicles or 4x2 vehicles with a high ground clearance and diff-lock only
